A derivative of leucine
The HMB (β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate) is a metabolite from leucine, an essential amino acid.
Leucine is widely known to be involved in muscle protein synthesis and therefore in recovery processes. It is predominantly present in lean meats, in some legumes, nuts and spirulina.
The interest of supplementation
In the body, about 5% of the ingested leucine is metabolized in α-ketoisocaproate (KIC). Only 5% of this kic is then converted to HMB.
In total: about 0.2 to 0.4% of the ingested leucine becomes HMB.
We also find, but in minute amounts, in some foods such as fish, grapefruit, lawyer or some meat. However, these dietary intakes remain negligible: to reach an effective dose of 3 g of HMB per day would require the unrealistic consumption of large quantities of animal proteins, which contain only 8% leucine. It would take about 38 to 75 kg of meat to produce 3 g endogenous HMB!
Thus, although the HMB is both naturally produced by the body and present in the diet, the quantities available are too low to have a significant effect without resorting to complementation.
