Practical guide

Thyroid: the role of iodine and selenium in food supplements

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It makes two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), from an amino acid, tyrosine, and a trace element, iodine. Its activity is controlled by another gland, the pituitary, via TSH.

The body cannot produce iodine: it has to come from the diet. This guide presents the nutrients linked to thyroid function, the products in this section and the precautions to be aware of.

Iodine

Essential for making thyroid hormones.

Selenium

A trace element in which the thyroid is particularly rich.

Medical advice

If you have a thyroid disorder or are on thyroid treatment, talk to your doctor.

Iodine

Where is iodine found and how much is needed?

Iodine is found mainly in fish and seafood, seaweed, iodised salt, dairy products and eggs. The reference intake for an adult is 150 µg a day. Too much is not desirable either: all sources need to be taken into account, including seaweed, whose iodine content varies widely.

Iode Goutte provides 150 µg of iodine as potassium iodide per drop, i.e. 100% of the reference intake. The product is intended for adults only; if you have a thyroid disorder, are on treatment, are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a healthcare professional for advice.

Composition

Selenium and combined formulas: what do they contain?

Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, fish and eggs; its reference intake is 55 µg a day. The products in this section offer it on its own or combined with iodine:

Sélénium Activ

100 µg of selenium per capsule, as selenomethionine, i.e. 182% of the reference intake.

Thyroïde Vitalité

Per capsule: 140 µg of iodine from the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, 27.5 µg of selenium, 2.5 µg of vitamin B12 and 2.25 billion lactic ferments.

Thyro-Mix

Per 3 capsules: 150 µg of iodine, 55 µg of selenium, 5 mg of zinc, 500 mg of L-tyrosine, guggul, and vitamins A, E and B12. Not recommended during pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ on the thyroid and supplements

Which food supplement for the thyroid?

The most common supplements provide iodine and selenium, the two nutrients that contribute to normal thyroid function. The choice depends on your dietary intake and your doctor’s advice.

How much iodine a day?

The reference intake for an adult is 150 µg a day, from all sources combined. Do not exceed the dose stated on the label.

Should iodine and selenium be combined?

Both contribute to normal thyroid function, which is why many formulas bring them together. They can also be taken separately.

Is seaweed a good source of iodine?

Yes, but its content varies greatly from one seaweed to another. In a supplement, choose one with a clearly stated iodine content per serving.

Can iodine be taken alongside thyroid treatment?

Not without your doctor’s advice. A supplement does not replace treatment or medical follow-up. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, also ask your doctor for advice.
