Lady’s mantle

What does lady’s mantle contain?

Like many members of the rose family, lady’s mantle is rich in polyphenols, which give it a slightly astringent taste:

Herbal tea, extract or gemmotherapy: which form?

The most traditional form is lady’s mantle tea, prepared with the dried aerial parts, on their own or blended with other plants. Its taste is mild and slightly tart.

It is also available as a dry extract, in capsules, and as a mother tincture, particularly in gemmotherapy complexes. In formulas, it is often combined with chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus), a Mediterranean shrub whose fruits are used.

Not to be confused with alpine lady’s mantle (Alchemilla alpina), a closely related species, nor with the soft lady’s mantle grown in gardens for its foliage.

Lady’s mantle benefits: what does the science say?

Researchers are mainly interested in the composition of lady’s mantle, particularly its tannins, and in the diversity of the many closely related species grouped under the name Alchemilla vulgaris.

To date, no health claim relating to lady’s mantle is authorised in the European Union. This research therefore does not allow any particular effect to be attributed to a herbal tea or a food supplement containing it.
