Caprylic acid: the C8 fatty acid from coconut oil

Caprylic acid, or octanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid formed of a chain of eight carbon atoms, hence its abbreviation C8. It belongs to the family of medium-chain fatty acids, which have 6 to 12 carbon atoms.

Its name comes from the Latin capra, “goat”: like its cousins caproic acid (C6) and capric acid (C10), it was described in goat’s milk fat, to which it gives a characteristic smell. Today, it is mainly obtained from coconut oil.

Capric and caprylic acid: what is the difference?

Medium-chain fatty acids differ in their number of carbon atoms. Three of them are present in coconut oil:

Caprylic acid (C8)

The shortest of the three, and often the most abundant in MCT oils.

Capric acid (C10)

Two more carbons; it almost always accompanies caprylic acid.

Lauric acid (C12)

The main fatty acid in coconut oil, on the borderline with long chains.

Sources and forms

Coconut oil, MCT oil or MCT powder?

In coconut oil and palm kernel oil, caprylic acid accounts for only a small share of the fatty acids. It is also found in goat’s milk and, in smaller amounts, in butter. In foods, it is not free: it is bound, together with other fatty acids, to a glycerol molecule to form triglycerides.

To obtain medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), the fatty acids in coconut oil are separated, then the C8 and C10 fractions are recombined with glycerol. The result is a fluid, almost tasteless oil, also available as a powder, which is easier to mix into a hot drink or to put in a capsule.

What research says

Caprylic acid benefits: where does the science stand?

Medium-chain fatty acids are not digested in the same way as long-chain fatty acids: being shorter, they are absorbed more directly and used quickly by the body. Researchers are interested in this particular metabolism, as well as in the properties of caprylic acid observed in the laboratory.

To date, no health claim relating to caprylic acid or MCTs is authorised in the European Union. This research therefore does not allow any particular effect to be attributed to a food supplement containing them. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, or if you are taking medication, ask your doctor for advice.

What are the benefits of caprylic acid?

It is a fatty acid naturally present in coconut oil, studied for its particular metabolism. However, no health claim is authorised for caprylic acid in the European Union.

Are caprylic acid and MCTs the same thing?

Not quite. Caprylic acid is a fatty acid; MCTs are triglycerides that contain it, most often together with capric acid.

Is there organic caprylic acid?

Virgin coconut oil can be organic. MCTs, obtained by fractionation, less often carry this label: check the label.
