Capric acid: the C10 fatty acid in MCTs

Capric acid, or decanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid whose chain has ten carbon atoms: it is written C10 or C10:0. It is one of the medium-chain fatty acids, alongside caproic acid (C6), caprylic acid (C8) and, depending on the classification, lauric acid (C12).

Like its two similarly named cousins, it owes its name to the Latin capra, “goat”: these fatty acids were identified in goat’s milk fat. In food supplements, capric acid most often comes from coconut oil.

Capric and caprylic acids: what is the difference?

These names look very much alike, but they refer to distinct molecules, which are told apart by the length of their chain:

Caproic acid (C6)

The shortest, present in small amounts in butter and coconut oil.

Caprylic acid (C8)

Liquid at room temperature, often the main component of MCTs.

Capric acid (C10)

Slightly longer and solid in its pure state; it complements caprylic acid.

Sources and uses

Where is capric acid found?

In nature, capric acid is mainly present in coconut oil and palm kernel oil, as well as in goat’s milk and, in smaller amounts, in cow’s milk. Like other dietary fatty acids, it is bound there to glycerol, in the form of triglycerides.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are obtained by isolating the C8 and C10 fractions of coconut or palm kernel oil. They are available as an oil, a powder or in capsules. In cosmetics, the ingredient “caprylic/capric triglyceride” is a very common emollient, derived from these same fatty acids.

What research says

Capric acid: what are the benefits according to science?

Shorter than most dietary fatty acids, medium-chain fatty acids are absorbed and used differently by the body. Researchers are interested in this metabolism, in the differences between capric acid and caprylic acid, and in the properties of capric acid observed in the laboratory.

To date, no health claim relating to capric acid or MCTs is authorised in the European Union. This research therefore does not allow any particular effect to be attributed to a food supplement containing them. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, or if you are taking medication, ask your doctor for advice.

Are capric acid and caproic acid the same thing?

No. Caproic acid has six carbon atoms (C6), capric acid ten (C10). The former is much less present in MCTs.

What are the benefits of capric acid?

It is a natural fatty acid found in coconut oil, studied for its metabolism. However, no health claim is authorised for capric acid in the European Union.

Why is capric acid mentioned as a weedkiller?

Some medium-chain fatty acids are used in contact weedkillers. These are technical products, unrelated to dietary MCTs.
