Pomegranate: fermented juice, extract and polyphenols

Pomegranate is the fruit of the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), a small tree native to the region of present-day Iran, grown all around the Mediterranean since Antiquity. Beneath its thick rind lie hundreds of juicy red seeds, called arils, each containing a small pip.

Its Latin name comes from granatum, “having seeds”. A symbolic fruit in many cultures, the pomegranate appears, for example, on the coat of arms of the Spanish city of Granada.

A seed-filled fruit

Hundreds of juicy arils, separated by thin membranes.

Rich in polyphenols

Particularly punicalagins, typical of pomegranate.

An ancient crop

Grown for thousands of years in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Composition

Punicalagins, anthocyanins… what does pomegranate contain?

Pomegranate is largely made up of water, but it stands out for its diversity of polyphenols, distributed between the rind, the membranes and the seeds:

Punicalagins

Tannins concentrated in the rind, which partly pass into the juice when the whole fruit is pressed.

Ellagic acid

Resulting from the breakdown of punicalagins, it is often used as a reference marker for extracts.

Anthocyanins

The pigments that give the seeds and juice their ruby-red colour.

Forms

Fermented pomegranate juice, concentrate or capsules?

Fermented pomegranate juice is made from pomegranate juice and pulp, part of which has been fermented. It is generally sold as a concentrate, to be diluted in water: a small amount is enough to make a large glass.

Pomegranate is also available in capsules of freeze-dried juice, as a peel or fruit extract standardised for ellagic acid, as a powder, or even as a fruit spread combined with other fruits. Finally, it is included, in smaller amounts, in formulas combining several plants.

What research says

Pomegranate benefits: what does the science say?

Its richness in polyphenols makes pomegranate a widely studied fruit. Researchers are particularly interested in how punicalagins are transformed by the gut microbiota into compounds called urolithins, and in the effects of fermentation on the composition of the juice.

To date, no health claim relating to pomegranate is authorised in the European Union. This research therefore does not allow any particular effect to be attributed to pomegranate juice or to a food supplement containing it. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice.

Buying guide

How to choose a pomegranate food supplement?

Polyphenol content

A reliable product states the amount of polyphenols per serving.

The whole fruit

A juice made from the whole fruit (juice and pulp) also contains compounds from the rind and membranes.

Juice or capsules

The concentrate is diluted and drunk; capsules are easy to carry and have no taste.

Sugars

The juice provides the fruit’s natural sugars: check the nutrition table.

Frequently asked questions

Pomegranate FAQ

What is fermented pomegranate juice?

A pomegranate juice, often concentrated, part of which has undergone fermentation. It is diluted in water before drinking.

What are punicalagins?

Polyphenols of the tannin family, characteristic of pomegranate. They are mainly found in the fruit’s rind.

Pomegranate juice or pomegranate capsules?

It is a matter of preference. Juice lets you enjoy the taste of the fruit; capsules of freeze-dried juice are more practical to take with you. Compare the amount of polyphenols per serving.

How should pomegranate concentrate be stored?

Once opened, keep it in the fridge and observe the period stated on the label.

Where can you buy a pomegranate food supplement?

In organic shops, pharmacies and online. At NATURAMedicatrix, you will find pomegranate as fermented juice, in capsules, in packs and as a fruit spread.
