Chaste tree: the “monk’s pepper” of the Mediterranean

Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is an aromatic shrub of the Lamiaceae family, the same as lavender and rosemary. It grows wild around the Mediterranean and as far as Western Asia, preferably along watercourses and on damp soils.

Its finger-like leaves and long spikes of purple flowers also make it an ornamental plant. But it is above all its berries, small, dark and peppery-tasting, that are used in herbalism.

A Mediterranean shrub

It flowers in summer, in very fragrant lilac to purple spikes.

Peppery berries

The dried fruits are used, whole or as an extract.

An ancient plant

Already described by Greek and Latin authors in Antiquity.

Composition

What do chaste tree berries contain?

Like many aromatic plants, chaste tree contains a varied range of plant compounds, concentrated in its fruits:

Iridoids

Notably agnuside and aucubin, bitter-tasting compounds.

Flavonoids

Including casticin, often used as a marker to characterise extracts.

Diterpenes and essential oil

Responsible for the aromatic scent and peppery flavour of the berries.

History and forms

Why is chaste tree called “monk’s pepper”?

Its Latin name agnus-castus combines the Greek agnos and the Latin castus, meaning “chaste”. In the Middle Ages, its berries are said to have been used in monasteries instead of pepper, which earned it the nicknames monk’s pepper or pepper tree.

Today, chaste tree is available as dried berries for herbal tea, as a dry extract in capsules, as a liquid extract or as a hydrosol. It is very often combined with other plants from the herbal tradition, in particular lady’s mantle, yarrow or chamomile.

What research says

Chaste tree: what does the science say?

Chaste tree is one of the most studied European plants. Researchers are particularly interested in the composition of its extracts, their standardisation (for example on casticin or agnuside content) and the way its diterpenes interact with the body.

To date, no health claim relating to chaste tree is authorised in the European Union. This research therefore does not allow any particular effect to be attributed to chaste tree or to a food supplement containing it. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice.
