Vitamins K1 or K2?

K vitamins are part of the fat-soluble vitamins, just like vitamins D, E and A.

K vitamins exist in different forms including phyloquinone (vitamin K₁), that we find mainly in green vegetables (spinach, salad, cabbage ...) and the group of menaquinones (vitamin K₂).

The length of the side chains of vitamins K2 determines their name:

- Menaquinone 4 to 13 or MK-4 to MK-13

Quality dietary supplements usually use vitamin K2 MK-7. It is rarely found in our diet since it is naturally and in large quantities in the Natto (fermented soy seeds), a traditional dish consumed mainly in Japan, but whose intense smell and the little familiar taste reduce its attraction.

Production of vitamin K2

There are two approaches for the production of vitamin K2 MK-7.

The vitamin K2 Mk-7 organic synthesis has advantages compared to vitamin K2 from fermentation:

1. The production of vitamin K2 by fermentation presents 2 disadvantages:
   - The fermentation generates different forms of K2 vitamins, MK-7 mixed with MK-4 to MK-6.
   - A biologically less active or inactive form of MK-7 (CIS form) is also formed in more or less large proportions depending on the fermentation process.
2. Vitamin K2 MK-7 from an organic synthesis comes from geraniol and farnesol. These are purely vegetable substances:
   - The geraniol is, for example, in the essential oils of geranium, rose and coriander.
   - The farnesol is a component of rose essential oil as well as anise and jasmine.

The advantage of this organic synthesis is that it makes it possible to obtain only the biologically active form of the MK-7 (trans form).
